What's the perfect number of watches to own?

 By: Harry2 : September 1st, 2016-03:11
Hi friends! I'm on night shift and thinking about the perfect number of watches, and what opinions my fellow purists hold. I have two theories: Theory 1: optimum number of watches can be expressed as w=c + 1 Where 'w' is optimum number of watches, 'c' is ...

33

 By: Baron - Mr Red : September 1st, 2016-03:16
But the caveat here is that this number does not include sentimental watches. Y=X + A - (B)^c Where X (for me) is 33, B is the number of sentimental watches owned), c is the growth factor for future sentimental watches, and A is in irrational number that ...

Nice one! [nt]

7 more than the maximum number you think is reasonable.

 By: Bounce781 : September 1st, 2016-03:21
But when you get to that reasonable number inevitably you find 2 others that you just MUST have. Then you find a couple more, so that you are +4 to previous reasonable number Then you reason, well I'll add just one more, so I'll only be 5 more than my pre...

You're not wrong! [nt]

Every mans wishful thinking

1 watch (highly unrealistic)

If I could get....

GP Jackpot tourbillon I would say one If not then I would say UN Trilogy set and I would say three Honesty if you have your grail (let the stoning begin ) I would say 1 Yours D

I don't believe you for 1 second.

No way you could ever stop, you addict.

Shhhh :)))) [nt]

 By: amanico : September 1st, 2016-06:10

Your theory 1 seems right.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : September 1st, 2016-03:36
But I am guessing that no one on this site would say anything less than 5.

5^x [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : September 1st, 2016-03:41

Where x = definitely 1 [nt]

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : September 1st, 2016-04:52

i got that! [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : September 1st, 2016-07:00

I figured most would, but had to be clear.

The comments are not playing nice with me today.

There are days... ;) [nt]

Easy answer? As many as your heart can love. In that way, the "ideal" number can tend toward to the Infinite.

 By: Alkiro1 : September 1st, 2016-04:09
At the opposite, the practical choice would say that you only have two wrists (if you are lucky of course). So two would be the answer. The combination of these both answers give us: between 2 and the Infinite. Best wishes Alkiro

Great response! [nt]

Thank you Harry

I hear a true Purist talking!

 By: Ornatus-Mundi : September 1st, 2016-12:16
however, in my personal situation that could very well be just one, very careful chosen (and probably customised) watch. Magnus

Hi Magnus, my answer is not the one of a macho trust me (and sorry for my bad English). Well, I think if you replace the word "watch" by "woman" you will have a lot of different answers.

 By: Alkiro1 : September 1st, 2016-12:35
For example, a woman can be THE woman of one life for a man. He would be very happy until the end of his life with the same woman without felling the need to "see" other ones. At the opposite, you can find men never satisfied who always want to be "seduce...

You need 7 for a week.

 By: TheMadDruid : September 1st, 2016-05:53
But you need 31 for a month. So I guess 38. Of course you need 7 for a week-long vacation. And if you are lucky enough to be able to take a two-week vacation, then the number is 14. So, 38 + 7 + 14 is 59. 59 watches are what you need.

Or one per month... [nt]

12 is the magic number

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : September 2nd, 2016-02:54
I\'m seriously going for 12 max. If anything new comes in after reaching 12 something will just have to go. Thank god I bought a SevenFriday so we all know which one will fly out of the window without a blink of an eye

:-)

 By: Bounce781 : September 4th, 2016-19:25
I like the idea of a sacrifice watch when you reach your "maximum", so that way, there is always a chance of buying more pieces. Clever!

But of course! [nt]

 By: Harry2 : September 2nd, 2016-00:43

Obviously a trick question....

 By: Andy : September 1st, 2016-09:35
You never have the right number of watches...!!! Andy.

Unbelievable probably :-)

 By: sham1 : September 1st, 2016-10:03
But I would settle for one if it was either a Patek Philippe 5270R (perpetual calendar chronograph) or a Patek 5078R (minute repeater). I think in some circles these watches are the epitome of watch making. However, more realistically as my current budget...

it is a very entertaining thought to figure out what one think is the optimal number

 By: keks : September 1st, 2016-10:13
reading some of the responses I think it is something driven by personality. Some are hoarders and some know exactly what they want. I classify myself easily in the latter camp to keep life simple. Life feels much more rational that way, try if you have n...

Very well put mate!

 By: Harry2 : September 2nd, 2016-07:43
Yes it is cheaper than wives, and I also think it is good to let go. I am a wrist time guy also that wants to keep life easy and simple, I don\'t want a collection so big I can\'t wear them all often. Except maybe a one (let\'s face it, or two) piece (s) ...

Well....I managed to whittle down to 12

 By: rnaden : September 2nd, 2016-04:49
Thinking it was the perfect number - 12 months in a year, 12 watches - was a perfect number, or so I thought. Then whimsical purchases took it upwards, and now I'm back at 13....some call it an unlucky, number, but I think it is a "right" number for me, s...

Not bad at all! Nice! [nt]

I like that number. JerryW

Very funny answers!! :-)

 By: MTR : September 2nd, 2016-05:46
I would like to join the party and expand your formula! w = s - s*a + s*cc Legend: w = number of watches s = spouse a = angry factor cc = calmed down and just come back factor Everything is in balance as long as: a or at at least: a = cc. Seriously for me...

Thank you for this thread and

your unconventional approach! Best, Thomas

Although the formula always implies one more PuristS are not necessarily...

Analytical collectors. The heart make the primary decision.

Two! One for day and one for night.

But, like an addict, you always want more … more… MORE! Aloha. Bob

Its the same for bikes!

 By: jml_watches : September 2nd, 2016-15:09
hard tail mtb, full suspension bike, road bike, hybrid, folding, fixie & hack then you start wondering why there's a bike in the dining room. At least watches are a bit smaller Cheers JML

I used to cycle a lot!

 By: Harry2 : September 2nd, 2016-18:52
And I agree, cycling is notorious for quantity of gear.

I have no clue.

 By: JerryW : September 3rd, 2016-16:02
When I first started following thePuristS I thought the people with over 10 watches were crazy, well I joined the crazy club I guess a while back. I honestly have no clue how many watches I own and I do not want to know, just in case my wife asks. Just en...

I say 7 watches is all you need

 By: AnthonyTsai : September 3rd, 2016-16:15
Anything else, is excessive IMO! Tons of watches turn into safe queens and never see the day of light since you have too many. If 7 is still too much for you, then I suggest 3 high quality pieces which you consider "perfect watches". Cheers, Anthony

Personally... I think 15 is the ideal number...

 By: andrewluff : September 4th, 2016-02:40
and was my goal to trim down to 15, but it hasn't happened yet... but I think that probably 15 or so are on my wrist regularly so does that mean I can get rid of the rest... umm no way... its like a father giving a child away So this doesn't help really.....

The Solution

 By: DaneRoth : September 4th, 2016-21:39
3 more than 7 one for everyday of the week and 3 extra for in between thats the solution

So there is a method to this madness?

 By: Rockethier : September 6th, 2016-14:02
I agree on the w=s-1 But we can not seem to agree on s.

Use the average!

 By: Harry2 : September 7th, 2016-01:38
Then you get to have more than they say, yet they can\'t blame you for not compromising!
