successs, a very fleeting thing

The best PP in the last decade was to me: the 5170.
The success of the 5070 was, maybe mostly, driven by the fact that PP released a new manual chronograph in 60 or so years.
The well informed collectors, an investors, made a run for this piece and the nimbus of the 5070 was created. O.k., rightfully as it is a very handsome watch, albeit a tad big to my taste, but still very wearable.
The 5170 could not repeat the success of the 5070 although it was released with an uber-classic Patek chrono face and with an in house movement that is the bench mark since then.
Why could it not repeat the success of the 5070?
Maybe the collector's got saturated, maybe the price tag was too high or investors did not jump on it?
Multifactorial reasons were responsible for that, imho.
And before the 5170 the 5959 was the most compelling modern Patek for me, with a very classic Patek design and an unmatched and unrivalled movement.
It faces an even bigger dilemma than the 5170: it is very, very expensive, is produced in homeopathic numbers and is quite small for the taste of the wider audience.
The 5370 is maybe the result of the lessons that Patek has learned from the 5959 reception: more likable to a wider audience, but not truly a captivating design.
Maybe the case design will make it special.
But let me finish on one thing to agree on and this we can do very easily: the 3448 and its design aspect.
Here we have got a truly mesmerising design and a movement that is regarded as one of the best automats from Patek.
There is no first of, thinnest, most expensive or whatsoever detail that has led to the success of the 3448 and its strong desirability.
Here we have got a "humble" Patek that has won the hearts of the collectors by a crucial aspect: the aura.
Cordially
